Mixing has limited impacts on the foliar nutrition of European beech and Scots pine trees across Europe

چکیده
Tree species-mixing has been suggested as one option to counteract the adverse effects of global change on tree mineral nutrition, yet effect mixing nutrient availability remains poorly documented. We therefore analyzed current foliar (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) quantities and ilr balances (isometric log transformed ratios between elements or groups elements) for 261 European beech 248 Scots pine trees from 15 sites, each consisting beech-pine mixed stand respective monocultures, across a gradient environmental conditions in Europe. hypothesized an overall positive content, that this would be stronger nutrient-poor sites. Using linear models multivariate regression models, we first tested species (beech/pine) composition (pure/mixed) all sites; then investigated whether was related site fertility. The leaves needles differed significantly balances. For both species, significant were detected some nutrients balances; those effects, however, could not consistently contrasted species. most balances, influenced by nutritional status, but pattern expectation: absence minor differences monocultures mixtures at lower end chemical fertility gradient, maximum rich soils. contrasting status only partly explained nutrition. Our results claim better understanding nutrient-related mechanisms associated with complementarity points towards need further expand existing frameworks account nature

Hydraulic adjustment of Scots pine across Europe.
* The variability of branch-level hydraulic properties was assessed across 12 Scots pine populations covering a wide range of environmental conditions, including some of the southernmost populations of the species. The aims were to relate this variability to differences in climate, and to study the potential tradeoffs between traits. * Traits measured included wood density, radial growth, xylem...
متن کاملEffects of foliar potassium concentration on morphology, ultrastructure and polyamine concentrations of Scots pine needles.
We examined the effects of three foliar potassium concentrations (high, intermediate and low) on the morphology, ultrastructure and polyamine concentrations of current-year and 1- and 2-year-old needles of 30-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. Foliar K concentration had only a slight effect on needle morphology. The sclerenchyma cell walls were thinner, the xylem area was larger, ...

Impacts of predicted climate change on recruitment at the geographical limits of Scots pine
Ongoing changes in global climate are having a significant impact on the distribution of plant species, with effects particularly evident at range limits. We assessed the capacity of Pinus sylvestris L. populations at northernmost and southernmost limits of the distribution to cope with projected changes in climate. We investigated responses including seed germination and early seedling growth ...
متن کاملHarmful effects of atmospheric nitrous acid on the physiological status of Scots pine trees.
An open top chamber experiment was carried out in the summer of 2003 to examine the effect of nitrous acid (HONO) gas on the physiological status of Scots pine saplings (Pinus sylvestris). Four-year-old pine trees were exposed to two different levels of HONO gas (at ca. 2.5 ppb and 5.0 ppb) and a control (filtered air) from early evening to early morning (18:00-6:00), in duplicate open top cham...
